Omitting Facts? C’mon Reporters!

An Opinion from a concerned reader, and OBX resident. We present their findings below.

The allegations against Jerry Tillett present a narrative that omits critical facts, overlooks glaring evidentiary inconsistencies, and fails to meet basic verification standards. When those facts are fully examined, the conclusion is unavoidable: the audio recording at the center of this controversy is unreliable, demonstrably altered, and knowingly misrepresented.

There are three known versions of the alleged recording:

  • The first version, published by Richard Burrus, contained no reference to any shooting whatsoever.
  • A second version later emerged that suddenly included references to shooting.
  • A third, longer version, referenced by a reporter, included the original recorder’s voice—confirming that earlier versions had been edited.

These discrepancies alone establish that the audio has been cut, altered, and selectively edited. The Assembly’s reporter’s own acknowledgment that the recorder’s voice had to have been removed is confirmation of manipulation.

Two independent experts, along with an additional non-expert using AI detection software, have concluded that the audio was artificially altered and edited. The campaign is not speculating; it is a technical analysis supported by audible inconsistencies that can be heard even without specialized equipment.

Despite repeated requests, those in possession of the recording have refused to surrender the original or a clean, unaltered copy for forensic testing. If the audio were authentic and accurately represented Jerry Tillett’s words, such testing would conclusively prove it. The refusal to allow verification speaks volumes.

Virtually everyone familiar with Jerry Tillett’s voice, including the District Attorney, has stated unequivocally that the voice making racial statements is not his.

The recording contains brief, innocuous remarks by Jerry Tillett and his wife, referencing what is described as a “funny story.” These comments are non-racial and benign. The racial statements come from two unidentified male voices, not Jerry Tillett.

Notably, the racial statements use phrasing such as “you should have shot”. Jerry Tillett does not—and logically would not—refer to himself as “you.” That linguistic fact alone undercuts the allegation.

Further, those statements are taken nearly verbatim from a popular scene in the Eddie Murphy film Life, strongly suggesting splicing from an external source rather than an authentic conversation.

The recorder is Briana Daniels, wife of Dare County sheriff candidate Teddy Daniels. The audio was first released immediately after a lawsuit was filed against Briana Daniels, seeking payment for a residence she has occupied for more than two years without paying the loan, insurance, or property taxes—obligations that fell instead on her former husband despite a separation agreement requiring her to pay them.

(Note: This allegation stems from communications between Tillett’s attorney and the writer at The Assembly, which could only have originated from Briana herself; we are alleging this in our complaint as it appears absolutely wrong and without foundation, though proof is pending before revealing the full truth.)

That lawsuit also alleges malicious conduct and defamation, and a separate legal proceeding seeks full custody of the minor child, citing multiple concerns involving both Briana and Teddy Daniels. Among those allegations are claims that Teddy Daniels cursed at the child and the child’s friends, and that the child reported hearing Teddy Daniels himself use racial slurs, including the N-word.

Teddy Daniels has a reported history of fabricating and altering audio and video, as detailed on sites like “The Real Teddy Daniels” and “Con Man Ted” , along with related discussions on “Ticked Off Patriots.” These platforms have highlighted such assertions for years, including claims of impersonation (e.g., posing as a newscaster to promote scams). Yet Teddy Daniels has never attempted to defend or refute them for any extended period. This context is not incidental—it is directly relevant to assessing credibility and motive.

Both Briana Daniels and Richard Burrus know that Jerry Tillett is not the person making racial statements on the recording. Daniels knows the identities of the two male voices responsible for those remarks. Yet both Daniels and Burrus have refused to cooperate with law enforcement, declined interviews, and demanded attorneys instead.

Despite this, reporters have allowed intentional wordplay and misrepresentation, permitting statements such as “Jerry Tillett’s voice is in the audio” without clarifying the critical fact that his voice is not making any racial or racially tinged statements.
That omission is not trivial—it fundamentally misleads the public.

The initial allegations originated with Richard Burrus and Devin Kilgore, both convicted criminals with extensive histories of harassment and defamation.
Devin Kilgore is a convicted meth dealer who received a deal to avoid mandatory prison time and has a documented history of attacking prosecutors, judges, court staff, probation officers, and even his own attorney.

Richard Burrus has 11 criminal convictions, including threats to kill his own parents, prior convictions for cyberstalking, and multiple court orders prohibiting him from posting on social media due to similar conduct. He currently faces additional pending charges of the same nature.

Together, Burrus and Kilgore have an established pattern of online trolling and harassment, routinely targeting public officials by posting fabricated allegations involving sex, drugs, and manipulated audio or video.

The article fails to grapple with these facts. It treats an obviously manipulated recording as credible while ignoring expert findings, refusing to scrutinize motives, and repeating claims from sources with long, documented histories of criminal misconduct and defamation.

Until the original, unaltered recording is produced and subjected to independent forensic analysis, the allegations against Jerry Tillett remain unsupported, misleading, and unjust.

The public deserves better.
