Senate District 1 Heats Up

Hanig’s Congress Jump Sparks Crowded GOP Field for Coastal Seat – Melissa, Jerry, Jay, Cole, David in the Mix: Who’s Got the Edge?

CURRITUCK – The race for North Carolina Senate District 1 just went from sleepy to sizzling. With Bobby Hanig ditching his re-election bid to chase Congress, the filing deadline delivered a packed Republican primary field – five contenders throwing hats in the ring for the sprawling coastal seat covering Currituck, Dare, Hyde, and parts beyond.

On the Republican side: Jerry (retired judge from Dare), Jay (farmer from Elizabeth City), Cole (Marine vet from Shiloh), David (Gates County commissioner), and others circling with talk of carrying the “working waterfront” mantle Hanig built through Shrimpgate fights and the new fisheries coalition. Melissa is the lone Democrat filed so far, setting up a potential general matchup.

The sudden vacuum turned what could’ve been a quiet incumbent stroll into a full-on GOP brawl – low-turnout primary where money, endorsements, and dockside buzz will decide who faces Melissa (or any other Dem) in November 2026.

“Hanig leaving opened the floodgates,” one Down East Republican told us over winter oyster roast chatter. “Everybody who’s waited years sees their shot now – but only one gets out of this primary alive.”

Early money and yard signs are trickling, forums planned for spring, but the real action’s already underground: Who lands Hanig’s quiet nod (or his donor list)? Does Jerry’s judicial background give him Raleigh pull, or do locals want fresh salt like Jay or Cole? Which late filer has backing versus pure grit like David?

Whispers are flying from Manteo to Manns Harbor: Some candidates already knocking doors, others building cash war chests, a few with old grudges resurfacing.

What have you heard in the District 1 race – who’s raising real money? Seen early endorsements shifting? Got the scoop on why certain names jumped in at the absolute last second?

The Outer Banks and northeastern counties need a strong voice on fisheries, erosion, storms, and Raleigh overreach – now more than ever. These local contenders are stepping up to fill Hanig’s big boots. But in a primary this heated, is the winner the one with courtroom gravitas… or the deepest coastal roots?

Stay tuned – March primaries come quick, and this one’s gonna leave marks. And if you’ve got acorns to stash on Senate District 1 cash flows, endorsement whispers, candidate dirt, or anything else bubbling in OBX or NC politics, the burrow’s deep, safe, and anonymous.
