Catastrophic Cyber Attack Hits OBXPolitics.com – Local Heroes Tip Us Off, We’re Back Rebuilding Stronger: What Do You Know About the Attack?

MANTEO – January 6, 2026. We’re still here, squirrels. But today we’re dropping a different kind of acorn: a straight-up status update from the burrow.

Over the holidays, OBXPolitics.com took a direct hit – a sophisticated cyber attack that knocked us offline and scrambled our backend like a bad bushwacker batch. Servers compromised, content wiped or corrupted, the whole digital house of cards came tumbling. This wasn’t some overseas bot farm; the chatter points to it originating right here in Dare County. Locals – real salt-of-the-earth folks who keep their ears to the docks and their eyes on the Bypass – caught wind of the whispers, reached out anonymously through our tip line, and gave us the heads-up that let us lock things down before total wipeout.

Thanks to those tip-droppers (you know who you are, and we sure as hell do too), we were able to contain the damage, restore from backups, and start the rebuild. No paywall, no ads, no corporate overlords – just us squirrels scrambling to repost everything we had: Shrimpgate rants, storm collapse heartbreak, Hanig’s Congress leap, erosion scars, housing squeezes, the whole raw timeline of OBX grit and Raleigh games.

You’ll notice things look a little jumbled right now. Old articles popping back up alongside fresh ones, dates blending like high tide and low. That’s because we’re restoring as fast as we can – piece by piece, acorn by acorn – while still chasing new truth bombs. The site wasn’t built to be a polished news outlet anyway. We’re the rumor mill, the tip jar, the safe place where questions get asked loud and answers get dropped quietly. No bylines, no spin, just community voices turning whispers into roars.

We’re grateful as hell to be back online. Grateful to the locals who tipped us before the hackers could finish the job. Grateful to every one of you who’s stuck around, shared a link, or buried an acorn in our form. This attack? It tried to silence the chatter. It failed. If anything, it proved why we exist: when the powerful (or the petty) try to shut down open talk, the Outer Banks fights back harder.

But whispers are swirling even now: Who really pulled the trigger on this attack? Was it a disgruntled insider mad about a story? A developer pissed over erosion coverage? Someone higher up who didn’t like the questions we keep asking about fisheries, wind farms, housing, elections? Or just a bored kid with too much time and bad code?

We’ve heard rumors on the docks, in the grocery lines, over coffee at the old spots. We’ve seen the tip line light up with “I heard it was…” fragments.

What have you heard about the attack – names, motives, local connections? Seen anything suspicious around Dare County networks lately? Got a hunch on why they’d target a little squirrel site like ours?

We’re rebuilding, one post at a time. Old articles resurfacing, new ones dropping as the timeline catches up. The fight for truth – coastal, Carolina, no-BS – continues. Thanks for loving the OBX the way we do: fiercely, honestly, together.

Stay tuned – the burrow’s patched but still open. And if you’ve got acorns to drop on the cyber hit, restoration quirks, or anything else bubbling in OBX or NC politics (or hell, even who you think did this), you know where to stash ’em safely and anonymously.
